The BMW 1 Series Special Edition gives plentiful performance for suburban and country routes. Interior trim fit and finish is to a high standard, seamless gear changes from six-speed gearbox with improved ride quality. This 1118 model 1.5-litre petrol unit producing 134bhp. With that amount of power on tap it goes from zero to 62mph in just 8.5 seconds, which is not that bad, especially for a petrol, and would match many hot hatches for pace and returning upto 60mpg. The body composure of this 1 Series is spot on too. Fling it into a bend and the car stays planted, digging into the tarmac and allowing you to catapult it out of an apex. The suspension remains compliant and well-controlled, so the ride stays impressively smooth at all times. BMW's smallest model is a brilliant all-rounder.
