The BMW 1 Series XDrive gives plentiful performance for suburban and country routes. Interior trim fit and finish is to a high standard, seamless gear changes from eight-speed gearbox with improved ride quality. This 120d model 2.0-litre diesel unit producing 187bhp and 400Nm of torque. With that amount of power on tap it goes from zero to 62mph in just 6.8 seconds, which is quick, especially for a diesel, and would match many hot hatches for pace. The body composure of this 1 Series is spot on too. Fling it into a bend and the car stays planted, digging into the tarmac and allowing you to catapult it out of an apex. The suspension remains compliant and well-controlled, so the ride stays impressively smooth at all times. BMW's smallest model is a brilliant all-rounder.
